Use
Septin-5 IgG is a biomarker of a rapidly progressive yet treatable form of autoimmune cerebellar ataxia. This condition manifests with a sudden onset of cerebellar ataxia and prominent symptoms related to eye movements, such as oscillopsia or vertigo. The condition may improve following immunotherapy. Detecting septin-5 IgG in serum specimens and reporting an end titer result assists in supporting the diagnosis of this autoimmune condition. If seropositivity is detected for septin antibodies through indirect immunofluorescence, it suggests an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, warranting further confirmation via a cell-binding assay.
Special Instructions
This test is only orderable as a reflex. For more information, see the MDS2 test, Movement Disorder, Autoimmune/Paraneoplastic Evaluation, Serum. If the indirect immunofluorescence pattern suggests septin-5, an additional charge will be applied for the septin-5 antibody cell-binding assay and this test. The test is available for New York State clients.
Limitations
Negative results for septin antibodies do not exclude the possibility of neurological autoimmunity or cancer. Interference by coexisting non-neuron-specific autoantibodies can usually be eliminated by serologic absorption. Results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings and other diagnostic tests.
