Silicon Quantitative, Serum or Plasma

Use
This test is used to quantitatively measure the level of silicon in serum or plasma. Silicon levels can provide important information about potential environmental or dietary exposure, particularly regarding increased levels from vegetable intake. Elevated levels indicate exposure and may require follow-up testing to confirm results and rule out contamination in collection.
Special Instructions
Specimen should be separated from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection. Serum or plasma should be transferred to an acid-washed transfer vial or ARUP trace element-free transport tube. Test is not performed at ARUP Lab; specimens must be sent to a different laboratory.
Limitations
Elevated results may be caused by environmental contamination during specimen collection. It is crucial to use certified metal-free containers for elemental testing. Unexpected elevated results should be verified by retesting using a trace metal-free container to ensure accuracy.
