Also known as: Stiff-Person Spectrum Disorders, Stiff-Person Syndrome
Use
This test is recommended for the assessment of stiff-person disorders, whether they manifest in classical or focal forms. This includes symptoms like stiffness, spasms, hyperekplexia, limb rigidity, myoclonus or limb dystonia, regardless of the presence or absence of encephalopathy.
Special Instructions
If a reflex test is performed, additional charges or CPT codes may apply. It is recommended to conduct testing in both serum and CSF samples to maximize diagnostic yield.
Limitations
The absence of positive test results does not exclude the possibility of stiff-person spectrum disorders. Low titer results of GAD65 antibody should be interpreted with caution. GAD65 is associated with other autoimmune disorders that may lead to neurological symptoms, such as type 1 diabetes and hypothyroidism. The test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA.
