Determine the presence or absence of Campylobacter species in stool
Special Instructions
Fecal specimens for different tests often require separate transport containers. For bacterial culture, use the C&S transport vial, and add only a thumbnail size portion of stool, about 1 to 2 g or 1 to 2 mL, to avoid reduced pathogen recovery. Proper specimen handling and transport are essential for accurate results.
Limitations
A single stool specimen cannot exclude bacteria as a cause of diarrhea. It is recommended to submit two or three stool specimens collected on different days to increase the probability of pathogen isolation. Specimens contaminated with urine, soap, or disinfectant may lead to inaccurate results. Prolonged transportation or incorrect storage can also affect pathogen viability and test accuracy.
