This test is used to detect genital and rectal Group B Streptococcus in pregnant individuals at 36-37 weeks of gestation. Detecting Group B Streptococcus is crucial as it helps prevent neonatal sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis, which are potential risks during childbirth if the bacteria are transmitted from mother to child.

Special Instructions

Patient preparation involves collecting a vaginal then rectal specimen with the same swab from pregnant individuals at 36-37 weeks of gestation. Specimen source must be specified, and specimens should be transferred to Liquid Stuart media or Amies media (eSwab ARUP supply #45877) after collection.

Limitations

Routine susceptibility testing for Group B Streptococci is not performed due to predictable susceptibility to penicillin and most other beta-lactams. Susceptibility testing is available upon request for penicillin-allergic patients. Incorrect specimen media can lead to rejection, and specimens must be processed within stability limits.
