Streptococcus pneumoniae Antibodies, IgG (23 Serotypes)
Also known as: PNEUMO 23
Use
This test is used to evaluate antibody production and rule out antibody deficiency in patients vaccinated with a pure polysaccharide vaccine (e.g., Pneumovax) or protein conjugated vaccine (e.g., Prevnar or Vaxneuvance). A pre- and post-vaccination comparison is required to adequately assess the humoral immune response to the Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccines. This evaluation is important for understanding an individual's immune response and potential protection against pneumococcal infections.
Special Instructions
Postimmunization specimen should be drawn 30 days after immunization and, if shipped separately, must be received within 60 days of preimmunization specimen. Mark specimens clearly as 'pre' or 'post' to ensure they are tested simultaneously.
Limitations
Testing of post-vaccination samples alone will only provide a general immune status of the individual to various pneumococcal serotypes, and response may vary based on age, past exposure, immunocompetence, and pneumococcal serotype. Indications of immune system competence are delineated as an adequate response to at least 50 percent of the serotypes for those aged 2-5 and to at least 70 percent for those aged 6-65. Antibody concentration greater than 1.0-1.3 ug/mL is generally considered long-term protection.
