Use
Diagnosis and management of patients with renal lithiasis by predicting the likely composition of the stone, identifying specific risk factors for stone formation using a random urine collection, and monitoring the effectiveness of therapy by confirming that the crystallization potential has decreased. Additionally, it evaluates the kidney excretion of acid and urine pH.
Special Instructions
A timed 24-hour urine collection is the preferred specimen for measuring and interpreting this profile to determine kidney stone risk factors. Random urine collections with individual analytes normalized to urinary creatinine may be clinically useful in those who cannot collect a 24-hour specimen, especially small children. X-ray dyes and contrast media will affect uric acid test results. If a kidney X-ray with dye or CT scan with contrast has been performed, the patient should wait a minimum of 1 day before starting collection. Urine must be collected before gallbladder X-ray tablets, otherwise wait 7 days.
Limitations
The urine is often supersaturated with respect to stone-forming crystals, even in non-stone formers. Individual interpretation of the supersaturation values in clinical context is critical. Treatment may reduce supersaturation for one crystal type but increase it for another. Test results must consider specific treatment goals. Low urine volume is a universal risk factor for kidney stones.

Collection Instructions
Collect a random urine specimen, mix collection container thoroughly and divide the urine into 7 plastic tubes (2 x 10 mL and 5 x 5 mL). Refrigerate specimen after collection. Specimen pH should be between 4.5 and 8.
Patient Preparation
If a kidney X-ray with dye, CT scan with contrast, or cholangiography has been performed, patient should wait a minimum of 1 to 7 days depending on the procedure before starting collection.
Storage Instructions
Refrigerate after collection. Stable for 14 days refrigerated, 72 hours ambient, or 14 days frozen.
