Testosterone (Adult Females, Children, or Individuals on Testosterone-Suppressing Hormone Therapy)

Use
This mass spectrometry test is used to measure a wide range of testosterone concentrations. It is particularly useful when low concentrations are expected, regardless of the patient's sex assigned at birth. It can also be used to monitor testosterone-suppressing hormone therapies, such as antiandrogens or estrogens. Free or bioavailable testosterone measurements may provide supportive information, but this test specifically measures total testosterone levels.
Special Instructions
Specimen should be collected between 6-10 a.m. to ensure accurate measurement of testosterone levels due to its diurnal variation. It is important to separate serum or plasma from cells as soon as possible and within 2 hours of collection to maintain sample integrity.
Limitations
This test is developed and performance characteristics have been determined by ARUP Laboratories. It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. The results should be interpreted with regard to the clinical context and are intended for use within a CLIA certified laboratory setting. Users should refer to cisgender female reference intervals for individuals on testosterone-suppressing hormone therapies.
