Thyroglobulin Antibody and Thyroglobulin, IMA or RIA
Use
Thyroglobulin (Tg) measurement is intended to aid in monitoring for the presence of orthotropic and/or metastatic thyroid tissues in patients who have had thyroid gland ablation (using thyroid surgery with or without radioactivity). Measurement of thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) is used to identify patient samples that may be affected by TgAb interference in the measurement of Tg. Quantitative TgAb concentrations can also serve as a surrogate tumor marker for DTC recurrence and for monitoring changes in tumor mass in certain patients.
Special Instructions
This test may exhibit interference if the sample is from a person consuming high-dose biotin supplements. Patients should avoid biotin for at least 72 hours before sample collection.
Limitations
Changes in serum Tg concentrations should be interpreted with the total clinical picture. A single Tg measurement close to the detection limit provides minimal value, and serial testing is required. When changing Tg methods, reëstablishing a baseline Tg level is recommended. Tg IMA methods have limitations such as hook effects and anti-Tg interference. Although RIA-Tg methods are more resistant, no method is completely free from TgAb interference.
