Use
This test is useful for aiding in the diagnosis of thyroid autoimmune disorders such as Hashimoto thyroiditis, idiopathic myxedema, and Graves disease. It helps differentiate thyroid autoimmune disorders from non-autoimmune conditions like goiter or hypothyroidism. The presence of TPO antibodies indicates a higher likelihood of autoimmune thyroid conditions and is used to decide on treatment for subclinical hypothyroidism.
Special Instructions
Patients should not take multivitamins or dietary supplements containing biotin (vitamin B7) for 12 hours before specimen collection to avoid interference with the test results.
Limitations
Moderately increased levels of thyroperoxidase antibodies may also be found in patients with non-thyroid autoimmune diseases such as pernicious anemia or type I diabetes. The presence of anti-animal antibodies due to exposure can also interfere with the test results. It is crucial to consider these factors to prevent diagnostic confusion.
