Triglycerides Body Fluid with Reflex to Chylomicron Electrophoresis

Use
This test is used to measure triglyceride concentrations in body fluids such as drain, pericardial, peritoneal/ascitic, or pleural fluid. Elevated triglycerides in these fluids may indicate conditions such as chylothorax or pseudochylothorax, which require further diagnostic evaluation. If the triglyceride concentration is between 25-200 mg/dL, the presence of chylomicrons can suggest a chylous effusion, which is often related to damage or obstruction in the lymphatic system.
Special Instructions
If the triglyceride concentration is 25-200 mg/dL, chylomicron electrophoresis testing will be added and additional charges will apply. Specimen source must be provided for accurate analysis.
Limitations
Triglyceride measurements less than 50 mg/dL are not typically due to chylous effusions. In fasting patients, particularly those postoperatively, chyle may not be present even if there is lymphatic system damage, leading to potential false negatives. This test has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. FDA, but is performed in a CLIA-certified lab for clinical purposes. Improper specimen type, volume, or storage can affect accuracy.
