Use

This test is recommended for the diagnosis and management of acute coronary syndrome. Troponin T is a cardiac-specific troponin that is released into the bloodstream following myocardial necrosis. It is used to detect cardiac events, such as a heart attack, and to stratify risk in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Elevated troponin levels are indicative of myocardial infarction and are crucial for the appropriate management and treatment of patients presenting with ischemic heart disease symptoms.

Special Instructions

Separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered. Patients should follow any preparation instructions given by their healthcare provider to ensure accurate results.

Limitations

This test may not be suitable for the initial evaluation of cardiac disease without clinical correlation. Troponin levels can be affected by renal dysfunction, and other conditions such as myocarditis, heart failure, and pulmonary embolism can also cause elevated troponin levels. The test is not designed to predict future cardiac events or determine final treatment options without consideration of clinical findings and additional tests.

Collection Instructions

Separate from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Use a Plasma separator tube (PST) or green (lithium heparin) tube for collection.

Storage Instructions

CRITICAL FROZEN. Refrigerated specimens are stable for 24 hours, frozen for up to 1 year.

Causes for Rejection

Specimens collected in lavender or pink (K2EDTA), lavender (K3EDTA), potassium oxalate, sodium fluoride, or sodium citrate. Grossly hemolyzed specimens.
