Use
Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a herpesvirus causing chickenpox (varicella) in primary infections and shingles (zoster) in reactivated infections. Detection of VZV proteins is crucial for diagnosing VZV-related diseases, especially in skin lesions, ganglia, and tissues affected by shingles or encephalitis. This test confirms active infection or reactivation by detecting VZV glycoproteins or immediate-early proteins.
Special Instructions
This test is technical only and does not include a pathologist read. Fresh tissues should be fixed in formalin for 24-72 hours before transfer to 70% ethanol for long-term storage at 2-8°C if needed. Positively charged glass slides are required to prevent background staining and tissue loss.
Limitations
The detection is dependent on proper specimen preparation and fixation. Specimens not fixed in 10% NBF or B plus are rejected. Turnaround times are for clinical use only and subject to change based on biopharma protocol requirements, with final times specified in study contracts.

Collection Instructions
Fixative should be at a 20:1 fixative to tissue ratio, 10% neutral buffered formalin (NBF) for 6-72 hours (48-72 hours PREFERRED). Specimens may be transferred to 70% ethanol for transportation after fixation.

Causes for Rejection
Specimens must be fixed in 10% NBF or B plus. All other fixatives will be rejected.
