Use
The Viral Culture, Non-Respiratory test is used to detect and isolate adenovirus, cytomegalovirus, enteroviruses, herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, and varicella-zoster virus through cell culture. It is typically used as a supplementary test in conjunction with virus-specific testing, such as antigen detection or molecular testing, for comprehensive diagnosis of viral infections from non-respiratory sources. The test plays a crucial role in identifying and managing viral infections by determining the presence of these pathogens in various specimen types, enhancing the ability to implement appropriate treatment strategies.
Special Instructions
This test is not recommended as a standalone test. Virus-specific testing, either through antigen detection or molecular methods, should be performed in conjunction with the viral culture for enhanced accuracy of viral infection diagnosis. It is important to properly collect and store specimens as they are critical for a successful culture process. Additionally, collecting and shipping specimens to maintain the appropriate temperature is vital as specified under storage instructions.
Limitations
The Viral Culture, Non-Respiratory test cannot be used for the clinical identification of orthopoxviruses, including monkeypox virus. The culture method may vary in sensitivity for different viruses, and certain specimen types might be more suitable for detecting a particular virus. Moreover, factors such as specimen quality, collection method, and transport conditions can influence the test's sensitivity and specificity. For definitive viral identification, additional virus-specific tests may be required.

Collection Instructions
Fluid samples should be transferred to a sterile container or viral transport media. Stool samples should be transferred to an unpreserved stool transport vial. Swabs or tissue samples should be placed in viral transport media.
Storage Instructions
Specimens must be stored refrigerated and are stable for up to 72 hours. Freezing specimens is not acceptable.
Causes for Rejection
Use of calcium alginate swabs, eSwabs, dry or wood swabs is unacceptable.
