Use
The Viral Culture, Non-Respiratory and Cytomegalovirus Rapid Culture test is designed to isolate and identify viruses present in non-respiratory specimens such as lesions, tissue, or urine. It helps in diagnosing viral infections by culturing samples in a laboratory setting. This test is particularly useful in identifying the presence of viruses like adenovirus, cytomegalovirus, enteroviruses, herpes simplex viruses, and varicella-zoster virus. Molecular diagnostics are recommended for suspected cases of invasive cytomegalovirus due to its rapid and precise detection capabilities.
Special Instructions
For optimal results, it is recommended to specify the specimen source and the suspected virus on the order form. The test is performed between Sunday and Saturday, and identification procedures are billed separately from culture.
Limitations
The culture method may not detect viruses if they are present in low quantities or if they have non-viable status during the collection process. Additionally, certain conditions, such as using calcium alginate, eSwabs, or dry and wood swabs, can render specimens unacceptable and impact test results. Frozen specimens are also not suitable for this test type.

Collection Instructions
Collect eye swab, lesion, tissue (brain, colon, kidney, liver, etc.), or urine. Transfer fluid specimens to a sterile container and swab or tissue samples to 3 mL viral transport media.
Storage Instructions
Refrigerated transport required.
Causes for Rejection
Calcium alginate, eSwab, dry, or wood swabs are unacceptable. Frozen specimens are not accepted.
