Use
The Viral Culture, Respiratory test is used to detect various respiratory viruses that can be isolated by culture. These viruses include adenovirus, cytomegalovirus, enteroviruses, herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, influenza A and B, parainfluenza types 1, 2, and 3, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and varicella zoster virus (VZV). This test is particularly useful for diagnosing viral infections in patients exhibiting respiratory symptoms. While molecular testing methods may provide more sensitivity, this culture method allows for identification and isolation of live viruses.
Special Instructions
Specimen source is preferred when submitting samples for the Viral Culture, Respiratory test. Storage and transport conditions must be adhered to ensure the viability of the sample. Viral transport media is recommended for swab or tissue specimens.
Limitations
The test has limitations in sensitivity compared to molecular testing methods, which may detect viruses at lower concentrations. Rapid respiratory virus screenings may not detect all mentioned viruses and may require further testing for definitive identification. Unacceptable conditions include specimens collected with calcium alginate, eSwabs, dry, or wood swabs, which may impede accurate viral isolation.
