West Nile CSF Interpretation
Use
Interpretation of testing for a laboratory diagnosis of infection with West Nile virus using spinal fluid specimens. This test aids in the diagnosis of central nervous system infection with West Nile virus, an arbovirus that primarily infects birds but can also affect humans and horses. Infected individuals may exhibit symptoms ranging from mild flu-like symptoms to severe neurological diseases such as meningitis or encephalitis.

Limitations
The sensitivity of PCR detection for WNV RNA is approximately 55% in spinal fluid. False-positive results may occur in patients infected with other flaviviruses such as dengue, St. Louis, and Zika viruses. False-negative results can arise in immunosuppressed patients or from high IgG interference, although this has not been observed. The assay cannot distinguish between intrathecal antibody synthesis and antibodies introduced through blood contamination.
