Use

This test is used as a semi-quantitative method to detect West Nile virus-specific IgG in serum specimens where there is a clinical suspicion of West Nile virus infection. It should not be used solely for quantitative purposes, nor should the results be used without correlation with clinical history or other data. A seroconversion between acute and convalescent sera is considered strong evidence of current or recent infection. The test is designed to identify past infection or exposure rather than diagnosing acute West Nile infection.

Special Instructions

The test is not recommended for diagnosing acute West Nile infection. Parallel testing is preferred, and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days from receipt of acute specimens. Mark specimens as 'acute' or 'convalescent' plainly.

Limitations

Other members of the Flaviviridae family, such as St. Louis encephalitis virus, exhibit extensive cross-reactivity with West Nile virus. Therefore, serologic testing specific for these species should be considered. The best evidence for infection is a significant change in two appropriately timed specimens, both tested in the same laboratory at the same time.
