Allergens, Inhalants, California Pollen
Also known as: CA POL PAN
Use
The California Pollen Panel is used for assessing allergen sensitization to common inhalant allergens found in California. It measures allergen-specific IgE concentrations to a variety of pollen sources such as grasses, trees, and weeds, which are known to provoke allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Identifying specific allergens can help in managing and treating allergic rhinitis and related conditions.
Special Instructions
Multiple patient encounters should be avoided when collecting specimens for allergy testing to ensure accuracy. The test requires a serum separator tube, and multiple specimen tubes should be avoided to prevent contamination or error. Serum should be separated from cells as soon as possible or within two hours of collection and then transferred to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube for optimal stability and transport conditions.
Limitations
While the test quantifies allergen-specific IgE concentrations, these concentrations may not directly correlate with the severity of clinical symptoms or skin test results. Concentrations in the range of 0.10-0.34 kU/L are especially intended for use by specialists due to undetermined clinical relevance. A negative result does not rule out the possibility of a clinical allergy or even severe allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis. Thus, results should always be considered alongside clinical history and other diagnostic findings.
