Allergens, Inhalants, Southwest Extended Profile
Also known as: SWEXT
Use
The Allergens, Inhalants, Southwest Extended Profile is used to identify specific IgE antibodies to a broad range of environmental inhalants specific to the Southwest region, including grasses, trees, weeds, molds, and dander. This test helps diagnose allergic conditions such as hay fever, asthma, and allergic rhinitis by detecting sensitization to common allergens present in the environment. The quantitative results can guide clinical management by correlating with patient history and clinical symptoms.
Special Instructions
Multiple patient encounters should be avoided. Specimen should be collected into a serum separator tube and serum must be separated from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection. Care must be taken to handle and store the specimens properly to avoid rejection due to hemolysis, icterus, or lipemia.
Limitations
While increasing concentrations of allergen-specific IgE are indicative of increased sensitization, these concentrations may not correlate with the degree of clinical response or predict skin test reactions when challenged with specific allergens. Interpretation of results should consider the clinical history and in vivo reactivity to particular allergens. A negative result does not exclude the possibility of a clinical allergy or anaphylaxis.
