Antimicrobial Susceptibility - Carbapenemase Gene Detection by PCR
Also known as: CARBAR PCR
Use
The Antimicrobial Susceptibility - Carbapenemase Gene Detection by PCR test is designed to detect the presence of predominant carbapenemase genes, such as blaKPC, blaNDM, blaVIM, blaOXA-48, and blaIMP, which are responsible for resistance to carbapenem and other beta-lactam antibiotics. Its primary purpose is to aid infection control in detecting carbapenem-resistant bacteria. However, this test is not intended to guide or monitor treatment of an infection, as a negative result does not exclude other resistance mechanisms or assay-specific nucleic acid in concentrations below the level of detection.
Special Instructions
An additional processing fee will be billed for all isolates not submitted in pure culture. Isolate identification and specimen source are required. If species identification is not provided, it will be performed at ARUP with additional charges.
Limitations
This assay may not detect many variants that diverge from the IMP-1 sequence, such as IMP-2, IMP-7, IMP-8, IMP-13, or IMP-14, which may generate a negative IMP result. The assay may detect IMP-4 at reduced sensitivity and might produce false-negative results for uncommon OXA-48-like variants.
