Antimicrobial Susceptibility - Enterobacteriaceae
Also known as: MA ENTER
Use
The Antimicrobial Susceptibility test for Enterobacteriaceae is designed to determine the in vitro susceptibility of enteric bacterial organisms to a wide range of antimicrobial agents. This test aids clinicians in selecting appropriate antibiotics for treating infections caused by Enterobacteriaceae. Timely and accurate identification of antibiotic susceptibility helps prevent the use of ineffective treatments and contributes to better patient outcomes. The test examines bacteria commonly found in the intestines, which can cause infections if they spread to other parts of the body.
Special Instructions
An additional processing fee is billed for organisms not submitted in pure culture. If species identification is not provided, ARUP will perform the identification, which incurs additional charges. Selective reporting is conducted based on the organism and source.
Limitations
This test has limitations when mixed cultures or nonviable organisms are submitted, making them unacceptable for testing. The test is not FDA-cleared or approved but is developed and performed in a CLIA-certified laboratory. Resistance can develop in gram-negative rods to all beta-lactam agents except carbapenems after initial susceptibility to extended spectrum cephalosporins.
