Antimicrobial Susceptibility - Viridans Streptococcus
Also known as: MA VIRS
Use
This test determines the in vitro susceptibility of viridans streptococci to a panel of antimicrobial agents. It is clinical significant for guiding therapy in infections caused by viridans streptococcus, particularly in cases where antibiotic resistance may be a concern. Viridans streptococci are part of the normal flora in the oral cavity but can cause opportunistic infections, especially in individuals with damaged heart valves or weakened immune systems. Susceptibility testing helps in selecting appropriate antibiotics for treatment.
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
The test is limited by the conditions under which susceptibility testing is performed, using a CLSI-approved broth microdilution method with custom-made MIC panels. Mixed cultures, nonviable organisms, and incorrect specimen submissions will affect the reliability of the results by potentially introducing additional fees or requiring retesting. The results must be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings to ensure accurate therapeutic guidance.
