Arbovirus Antibodies, IgG, Serum
Also known as: ARBO SER G
Use
This test is used for the semi-quantitative detection of IgG antibodies specific to various arboviruses, including West Nile Virus, Californian Encephalitis, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Western Equine Encephalitis, and St. Louis Encephalitis Virus, in serum samples. It aids in assessing exposure to these viruses, which are transmitted by mosquitoes and can cause encephalitis and other diseases. The presence of IgG antibodies may indicate past exposure or infection, and in some cases, recent infection, but cross-reactivity with other flaviviruses should be considered.
Special Instructions
Not recommended as a stand-alone test. Refer to Arbovirus Antibodies, IgG and IgM, Serum (2001594) for complete testing. Parallel testing is preferred, and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days from receipt of acute specimens. Mark specimens plainly as 'acute' or 'convalescent.'
Limitations
This test should not be used solely for quantitative purposes, nor should the results be used without correlation to clinical history or other data. Due to cross-reactivity with other flaviviruses, the test may not distinguish between these viruses. A single positive IgG result may not be sufficient to diagnose an acute infection; additional testing, such as paired IgG assays on acute and convalescent specimens, is recommended for accurate diagnosis.
