Babesia Species by PCR
Also known as: BABPCR
Use
The Babesia Species by PCR test is designed as a first-line diagnostic tool for acute babesiosis, a tickborne disease. It detects nucleic acid from Babesia microti and can also detect Babesia duncani, B. divergens, and Babesia strains MO-1 and EU-1. However, it cannot differentiate between these species and strains. The test is crucial for accurately diagnosing babesiosis, which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. It is especially useful for patients presenting with symptoms consistent with babesiosis, such as fever, chills, and fatigue, particularly in endemic regions.
Special Instructions
For the Babesia Species by PCR test, collect the specimen in a lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA) tube. It is important to follow the specified specimen preparation and handling instructions to ensure the accuracy of the test results. If testing for anaplasmosis or ehrlichiosis is also required, consider ordering the Tick-Borne Disease Panel by PCR, Blood (test code 2008670) simultaneously.
Limitations
The Babesia Species by PCR test has certain limitations. A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or test-specific nucleic acid in concentrations below the level of detection by this test. Additionally, while nucleic acid from B. duncani, B. divergens, MO-1, and EU-1 strains will be detected, the test cannot differentiate between these species or strains beyond B. microti. There may also be limitations due to specimen quality and handling that could affect the detection sensitivity.
