This molecular assay detects Babesia microti DNA in whole blood or ticks using real‑time PCR, aiding in earlier and sensitive diagnosis of acute babesiosis, particularly when parasitemia is low or microscopy is negative.

Infected individuals with malaria may falsely test positive. Persistent Babesia parasitemia in asymptomatic hosts may complicate interpretation. A negative result does not exclude infection if pathogen levels are below the limit of detection.
