Bacterial Vaginosis by TMA
Also known as: BV TMA
Use
This test aids in the diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis by detecting the presence of specific bacteria associated with this condition. The test focuses on identifying Lactobacillus species (L. gasseri, L. crispatus, and L. jensenii), Gardnerella vaginalis, and Atopobium vaginae. It provides a qualitative assessment of bacterial loads relative to each other, which is used to diagnose bacterial vaginosis. The test is designed for medical use in patients aged 14 years and older and is significant for its ability to detect bacterial imbalances indicative of bacterial vaginosis.
Special Instructions
Results for individual organisms are not provided. This test is not recommended for individuals under the age of 14. The test requires a vaginal specimen collected with a pink swab from the Aptima MultiTest Swab Collection kit. It should not be used for home-collected specimens, nor is it valid for forensic use, such as evaluating suspected sexual abuse.
Limitations
A negative result does not exclude the possibility of an infection due to detection limits or sampling issues. The assay does not provide results for individual organisms but rather gives a qualitative assessment based on the relative loads of certain bacteria. As such, results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings. The test has not been validated for at-home patient collection and is not appropriate for forensic analysis.
