Candida auris Surveillance Culture
Also known as: MC CANAUR
Use
Candida auris Surveillance Culture is used to culture Candida auris from a skin specimen, which is useful for identifying C. auris to aid in control and prevention of its spread. Given the difficulty of treating C. auris due to its resistance to multiple antifungal drugs, accurate identification through culture is critical, particularly for public health and susceptibility testing. The availability of the test enhances capabilities for screening and managing potential outbreaks, thus mitigating infections in healthcare settings.
Special Instructions
Molecular diagnostics may be recommended to screen for C. auris colonization of the skin. In cases other than skin specimens, refer to Fungal Culture. An additional charge will apply for identification on any yeast suspected as Candida auris recovered in culture.
Limitations
The test is limited to skin swabs and cannot be performed on other specimen types. Environmental swabs are also unacceptable. Additionally, the test has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but is performed in a CLIA-certified laboratory. The interpretative guidelines for susceptibility are not available, and it is crucial to ensure proper specimen collection and handling to avoid false results.
