Chromosome Analysis, Products of Conception
Also known as: CHR POC
Use
This test is performed to analyze chromosomes in products of conception, typically to investigate potential chromosomal abnormalities that may lead to miscarriage or stillbirth. It provides valuable information about genetic causes of pregnancy loss and is often used in cases of spontaneous abortion, missed abortion, or intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD). Genetic counseling based on the results can help guide future reproductive planning for individuals and families experiencing recurrent pregnancy loss.
Special Instructions
Informed consent for genetic testing is required for New York patients, and the Prenatal Cytogenetics Patient History Form should be submitted with the specimen. It is crucial that tissue samples are handled properly, avoiding freezing and formalin, to ensure viable cultures.
Limitations
The methodology used may not detect small chromosomal rearrangements or low-level mosaicism and cannot identify submicroscopic deletions or duplications effectively found using genomic microarray analysis. Results depend on the growth of cultured cells, which can be influenced by specimen quality and handling. Suboptimal samples might not yield conclusive results, with delays or compromised reporting outcomes.

Collection Instructions
Thaw media prior to tissue inoculation. Products of conception in a sterile, screw-top container filled with tissue culture transport medium. If cytogenetics tissue media is not available, collect in plain RPMI, Hanks solution, sterile saline, or ringers. If specimen size is too large for a normal collection tube, a larger sterile container can be used.
