Citric Acid, Urine
Also known as: CITRIC U
Use
The Citric Acid, Urine test is used to evaluate and monitor patients with nephrolithiasis, or kidney stone disease. It can help in assessing the risk for stone formation by measuring the levels of citric acid. Low urine citrate levels are associated with an increased risk of calcium stone formation, while higher levels indicate a reduced risk. For patients with known kidney stones, monitoring citric acid levels can guide dietary and therapeutic actions to prevent the recurrence of stones.
Special Instructions
Collect a 24-hour urine specimen and refrigerate it during collection. Adjust pH to less than or equal to 2 by adding 6M HCl. A 4 mL aliquot of urine should be transferred to an ARUP standard transport tube, ensuring a minimum of 0.5 mL is available. Record the total volume, collection time interval, and pH on the transport tube and test request form. Specimens preserved with boric acid are also acceptable.
Limitations
This test is intended for use in a clinical laboratory setting and should not replace careful clinical assessments and considerations by healthcare providers. Variations in urine collection time or total volume can affect the results, necessitating the potential use of ratios to urine creatinine concentration for interpretive accuracy. The test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA, and its performance characteristics were determined by ARUP Laboratories. Results should be interpreted in the context of the overall clinical picture.
