Coccidioides Antibodies, IgM by Immunoassay, Serum
Also known as: COCCI M
Use
This test is used to screen for the presence of coccidioidal IgM antibodies in serum. It is not recommended as a standalone test for diagnosis. In most symptomatic patients, the IgM antibody appears by the second week of infection and usually disappears by the fourth month. The presence of IgM antibody suggests a current or recent infection.
Special Instructions
This test involves the use of recombinant and native Coccidioides antigens, including CF and TP antigens. It is not recommended as a standalone test. For comprehensive screening with confirmation, refer to the Coccidioides Antibodies Reflexive Panel, Serum.
Limitations
The test can produce equivocal results between 1.0 and 1.4 IV, where the presence of Coccidioides IgM antibody is questionable. In such cases, repeat testing in 10-14 days may be helpful. Positive EIA results should ideally be confirmed with immunodiffusion (ID) or complement fixation (CF) tests. If these fail to corroborate the EIA results, the diagnosis is less firmly established.
