Cytochrome b5 Reductase Enzyme Activity
Also known as: CYTOB5 RED
Use
The Cytochrome b5 Reductase Enzyme Activity test is used to confirm cases of heterozygous or homozygous methemoglobin reductase deficiency. This enzyme deficiency can lead to methemoglobinemia, a condition in which more than 1% of the patient's hemoglobin is in the oxidized form (methemoglobin) that cannot bind oxygen effectively, leading to impaired oxygen delivery to tissues.
Special Instructions
The test is performed by Mayo Clinic Laboratories and is not carried out at ARUP Laboratories. As a result, separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered. The sample must be whole blood transported in its original tube, and the specimen should be refrigerated during storage and transport.
Limitations
The test has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Performance characteristics of this test were determined by Mayo Clinic in a manner consistent with CLIA requirements. Stability for specimens is 18 days refrigerated, while ambient and frozen conditions are unacceptable.
