Filaria Antibody IgG4 by ELISA, Serum
Also known as: FILARIA
Use
The Filaria Antibody IgG4 test aids in the detection of antibodies to filaria, primarily associated with infections caused by major filarial parasites like Dirofilaria immitis, Wuchereria brancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Onchocerca volvulus. It is used to evaluate potential active filarial disease and help differentiate chronic filarial conditions such as elephantiasis, although these may not show a significant IgG4 response. Serological screening in combination with patient history and other laboratory results can aid in diagnosis.
Special Instructions
This test is not performed at ARUP Laboratories, and separate specimens must be submitted when ordering multiple tests. It is recommended to order Filaria Screen, Whole Blood with Reflex to Parasites Smear (Giemsa Stain) for detecting active filarial disease.
Limitations
Chronic filarial infections manifesting as elephantiasis may not show a significant IgG4 response and might not be detectable with this test. Cross-reactivity may occur with antibodies to other nematodes, particularly Strongyloides, resulting in potential false positives. The assay has not been FDA cleared or approved and was developed by Quest Diagnostics according to CLIA regulations for clinical use.
