Growth Hormone, 15 Minutes
Also known as: GH 15
Use
This test is used for the assessment of growth hormone (GH) levels to diagnose conditions such as growth hormone deficiency (GHD) in both pediatric and adult patients. In pediatric patients, very low peak GH concentrations on stimulation testing are consistent with severe GHD. In adults, the expected peak GH concentrations depend on the stimulation test performed, as described in the Endocrine Society guidelines. For suppression testing, healthy subjects should have GH concentrations of less than 1 ng/mL within 2 hours of ingestion of a 75 or 100 gram glucose dose, while patients with acromegaly fail to show normal suppression.
Special Instructions
This Growth Hormone assay is standardized to the Recombinant Second International Standard (IS): 98/574, and results read approximately 25 percent lower than with the previous standards (First IS: 80/505). Reference ranges have been modified according to the assay manufacturer.
Limitations
Thresholds distinguishing normal from partial GHD have not been well established. Inadequate response to two different provocative tests is required for diagnosis of GHD. Interpretation may vary based on the stimulation or suppression test performed, as specific guidelines and reference intervals apply.
