Hepatitis B Virus Surface Antigen with Reflex to Confirmation, Prenatal
Also known as: HBSAG PN
Use
The Hepatitis B Virus Surface Antigen with Reflex to Confirmation, Prenatal test is used for screening of Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in pregnant women. Detecting HBsAg is crucial as it helps in identifying women who are carriers of the hepatitis B virus, thereby preventing transmission to the fetus or during delivery. This test ensures early intervention and management to reduce the risk of perinatal transmission of hepatitis B, which can lead to chronic hepatitis B infection in newborns.
Special Instructions
Order this test only for prenatal specimens. If results for the HBsAg screen are reactive (≥ 1.0), then HBsAg Confirmation, Prenatal will be added, and additional charges will apply.
Limitations
This test should not be used for blood donor screening, associated reentry protocols, or for screening human cells, tissues, and cellular- and tissue-based products (HCT/P). There is a possibility of false positives; if the result is not supported by clinical evidence, repeat testing of a new sample is recommended.
