Hepatitis Be Virus Antigen
Also known as: HBEAG
Use
The Hepatitis Be Virus Antigen (HBeAg) test monitors the effectiveness of therapy in patients with Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It is typically ordered alongside other HBV markers such as HBV DNA, HBV surface antigen, HBV surface antibody, and HBe antibody. A positive result indicates active viral replication and high infectivity, thus providing essential information for managing chronic hepatitis B.
Special Instructions
Order this test only when a specimen is repeatedly reactive for hepatitis B surface antigen. It is not suitable for blood donor screening, reentry protocols, or screening human cells, tissues, and cellular-based products.
Limitations
This assay should not be used for blood donor screening, associated reentry protocols, or for screening human cells, tissues, and cellular- and tissue-based products (HCT/P). Specimens that are heat-inactivated, severely hemolyzed, lipemic, or contain particulate material are unacceptable. Furthermore, the test may yield falsely positive results in samples from patients with rheumatoid factor.
