Herpes Simplex Virus DFA with Reflex to Herpes Simplex Virus Culture
Also known as: HSVFAC
Use
The Herpes Simplex Virus DFA with Reflex to Herpes Simplex Virus Culture test is designed for the rapid identification of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections primarily in active lesions, such as vesicles, ulcers, and mucous membrane inflammation. It is particularly beneficial in clinical settings where differentiating between HSV infections and other conditions is critical for patient care and disease management. Despite the availability of molecular testing methods, this culture-based approach remains a reliable option when immediate results are necessary and where molecular testing may not be feasible.
Special Instructions
This test employs direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) staining and reflexes to HSV culture if the DFA result is negative or inadequate. Specimens should be collected from active lesions and stored in viral transport media at refrigerated temperatures. Note that additional charges apply if the test reflexes to culture.
Limitations
The sensitivity of the DFA methodology depends significantly on the quality and adequacy of the specimen. If the specimen contains fewer than 20 cells, the DFA result will be reported as 'inadequate,' necessitating a reflex to culture for accurate results. Additionally, the test does not differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2 beyond the primary detection phase, as it primarily confirms the presence of the virus using culture techniques.
