Use
This test is useful in confirming hepatic iron overload, particularly in individuals with hemochromatosis and no common HFE mutations. It is designed to evaluate the iron concentration in liver tissue, assisting in diagnosing and monitoring disorders such as hemochromatosis, porphyria cutanea tarda, and cirrhotic liver diseases.
Special Instructions
Age is required on the test request form to calculate the iron index. The entire specimen submitted will be used up during the testing process.
Limitations
The Hepatic Iron Index is not calculated for patients less than 14 years old. Results may be affected by chelation therapies, chronic blood loss, or phlebotomy. Unacceptable conditions include specimens less than 0.25 mg dry weight or those stored or shipped in saline.
