Kratom, Umbilical Cord, Qualitative
Also known as: KRA QQQ CD
Use
The Kratom, Umbilical Cord, Qualitative test is designed to detect and document fetal exposure to alkaloids found in kratom, an herbal product derived from the Mitragyna speciosa tree or related plants, that occurred during approximately the last trimester of a full-term pregnancy. It specifically identifies the presence of mitragynine and speciociliatine alkaloids in the umbilical cord tissue, indicating the maternal usage of kratom during the pregnancy. The test thus assists in understanding potential drug exposure of the fetus.
Special Instructions
The specimen requires at least 8 inches of umbilical cord, approximately the width of a sheet of paper. The cord should be drained of any blood, rinsed with normal saline or water, and transported dry in a routine urine collection cup or Security Kit for Meconium/Umbilical Drug Detection. The absolute minimum length of the cord acceptable is 6 inches.
Limitations
This test cannot determine the pattern and frequency of kratom use by the mother and a negative result does not exclude the possibility of kratom usage during pregnancy. Detection of kratom alkaloids depends on the extent of maternal use, stability and characteristics of alkaloid deposition in the umbilical cord tissue, and performance characteristics of the analytical method. The test does not imply impairment or predict outcomes for the infant.
