p53 with Interpretation by Immunohistochemistry
Also known as: P53 IP
Use
Abnormalities of the p53 gene are one of the most common genetic changes associated with cancer and can be found in a wide variety of tumor types. p53 protein expression is generally associated with a worse prognosis. According to some studies, nuclei staining in less than 10 percent of specimen cells is defined as negative for p53, and nuclei staining in greater than or equal to 10 percent of specimen cells is considered positive for p53. Results of this test should be interpreted with caution and within the context of other clinical data.
Special Instructions
This test code includes pathologist interpretation. Include surgical pathology report with specimen submitted for testing. Indicate tissue site on requisition. Refer to the ARUP Immunohistochemistry Stain Offerings brochure for more details.
Limitations
The test results should be interpreted with caution and within the context of other clinical data. Any specimens fixed in a fixative other than 10 percent neutral buffered formalin, as well as decalcified specimens, are unacceptable. Unacceptable conditions also include paraffin blocks with no tumor tissue remaining.
