Protein S, Total Antigen
Also known as: PROT S
Use
The Protein S, Total Antigen test is used to subtype deficiency in known protein S-deficient individuals. It should be used in combination with Protein S Free, Antigen or Protein S, Functional tests. This test is not recommended for detecting protein S deficiency and should not be ordered if the individual has been on warfarin therapy in the previous 2-4 weeks.
Special Instructions
Proper patient preparation includes ensuring that patients are off warfarin therapy for two weeks before the test for accurate measurement of protein S. Separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered.
Limitations
This test is not recommended for detecting protein S deficiency as it measures total protein S levels that can be affected by various factors including warfarin therapy. It should not be ordered if the patient has been on warfarin in the last 2-4 weeks, as this can lead to decreased protein S values. Serum and EDTA plasma, clotted or hemolyzed specimens are not acceptable for testing.
