Special Stain, Colloidal Iron
Also known as: COL FE SS
Use
The Special Stain, Colloidal Iron test provides critical insights in histopathology by detecting and visualizing iron deposits within tissue or cell samples. This is crucial in diagnosing diseases associated with abnormal iron accumulation, such as hemochromatosis or hemosiderosis, providing pathologists with clear visual evidence to assess and confirm these conditions accurately.
Special Instructions
Anatomic Pathology Test Request Form (ARUP form #32960) is recommended for submission. Use ARUP Client Services or ARUP Connect™ for test requests and further information. Ensure tissue block or slides are protected from excessive heat during transport.
Limitations
This test is intended for visualization of iron deposits using colloidal iron staining and cannot determine the exact quantitative levels of iron present. Results are interpretative and must be integrated with clinical and other diagnostic findings for a comprehensive evaluation. Proper specimen handling and preparation, including adequate fixation and embedding, are essential to avoid artifacts that may affect stain quality.
