Stool Culture, Yersinia
Also known as: MC YERS
Use
This test is used to diagnose Yersinia-associated diarrhea in patients with a suitable exposure history or risk factors, allowing for appropriate antibiotic treatment and management. It helps in detecting Yersinia species in stool samples, which are responsible for gastrointestinal infections.
Special Instructions
The test requires the preservation of stool specimens in enteric transport media (Cary-Blair) immediately upon collection. ARUP provides the necessary supplies, which can be ordered online or via contact with ARUP Client Services. Frequent, multiple tests within 24 hours are not acceptable.
Limitations
The test may not detect all cases of Yersinia infection, especially if the stool sample is improperly preserved or transported. Additionally, susceptibility tests are not included in the culture and are billed separately. Negative results do not completely rule out infection, and further testing may be necessary if clinical suspicion persists.
