Vitamin B12 and Folate
Also known as: B12/FOL
Use
This test aids in the detection of vitamin B12 or folate deficiency in individuals with macrocytic or unexplained anemia, or unexplained neurologic disease. A deficiency in these vitamins could lead to serious health issues such as megaloblastic anemia or severe neurological damage if left undiagnosed and untreated.
Special Instructions
Protect the specimen from light during collection, storage, and shipment to maintain its integrity. Ensure that the serum is allowed to clot completely at room temperature before centrifuging, and 2 mL of serum or plasma should be transferred to an ARUP Amber Transport Tube. The minimum volume required is 0.5 mL.
Limitations
EDTA plasma is unacceptable for this test, as well as hemolyzed or refrigerated specimens exposed to light for more than 24 cumulative hours. It is essential to adhere to the preparation and transport guidelines to ensure accurate results.
