Vitamin E, Serum or Plasma
Also known as: VIT E
Use
This test is used for the nutritional assessment of vitamin E, specifically examining the levels of alpha- and gamma-tocopherols in the serum or plasma. Vitamin E is an important antioxidant and its levels can help in evaluating deficiency or toxicity, as well as overall nutritional status.
Special Instructions
Patients should fast for 12 hours and avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to specimen collection. Collect specimens in a green (sodium or lithium heparin) or serum separator tube. Lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA) tubes are also acceptable. After collection, separate serum or plasma from cells within 1 hour and ensure proper storage conditions.
Limitations
The test is performed in a CLIA certified laboratory as a Laboratory Developed Test (LDT), but has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Whole blood or body fluids other than serum or plasma are unacceptable conditions, which may lead to specimen rejection. Hemolysis should be avoided during specimen handling.
