Acid-fast Organism Identification by PCR, MALDI-TOF and/or Sequencing With Reflex to Susceptibility Testing
Also known as: AFB Culture, Identification, Susceptibility
Use
This test is used to identify and determine susceptibility of acid-fast bacteria referred from another laboratory that has performed the culture of the clinical sample. Note: PCR testing for M. avium and MTB will only be performed on liquid-based broth submissions. Organisms not identified by PCR will have additional charges for identification by MALDI-TOF and/or nucleic acid sequencing.
Special Instructions
PCR testing for Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium tuberculosis will only be conducted on VersaTREK liquid-based broth submissions. Additional charges and CPT code(s) may apply if reflex testing is performed. It is essential for the submitting laboratory to ensure the organism is isolated on a pure culture and is not contaminated with non-acid-fast bacteria.
Limitations
The test has been developed and its performance characteristics determined by Labcorp; however, it has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Therefore, users should be aware of this context when interpreting results. Causes for specimen rejection include leaking or broken transport tubes/vials, unlabeled specimens or discrepancies in names between the specimen and request label, and primary clinical specimens received that are not properly cultured.
