Amitriptyline
Also known as: Elavil®, Endep®
Use
Evaluate toxicity; monitor therapeutic levels
Special Instructions
Specimens should be collected immediately prior to the next dose unless specified otherwise. Therapeutic drug monitoring accounts for factors such as co-medications, diet, smoking habit, and impaired organ function, and is complementary to pharmacogenetic genotyping.
Limitations
Developed by Labcorp, this test's performance characteristics have not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Tricyclic antidepressants have significant drug interactions, notably with antiepileptics and other CNS-active drugs. They should be avoided in pregnant and lactating women due to unestablished safety. Elderly patients are prone to postural hypotension, urinary retention, and sedation. Co-administration with MAO inhibitors is contraindicated.
