Bacterial Vaginosis (Sialidase), Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, NAA, Vaginal Yeast Culture
Also known as: BV (Sialidase), Ct/Ng/Tv (NAA), Vaginal Yeast (Culture)
Use
BV (sialidase) activity: Enzyme activity test for use in the detection of vaginal fluid specimens for sialidase activity, an enzyme produced by bacteria associated with bacterial vaginitis, including Bacteroides spp, Prevotella spp, and Mobiluncus spp, and some G vaginalis. In a recent study, Bradshaw et al demonstrated the test to be 88% sensitive and 95% specific.
Special Instructions
Avoid collecting specimens from the cervix as it can increase risks for obstetric patients and may not reflect the true vaginal sialidase activity. Patients should not use vaginal creams, douches, spermicides or lubricants within 72 hours prior to specimen collection to avoid inaccurate results. Swabs should be placed immediately in provided transport tubes and stored appropriately.
Limitations
Collecting from the cervix might produce misleading results due to naturally higher sialidase activity. False negatives are possible if samples are insufficient or collected from individuals undergoing antimicrobial treatment. Specimen rejection could occur if transport instructions are not followed or if submitted with disallowed devices.
