Use
Establish the presence of primary or metastatic neoplasms; aid in the diagnosis of respiratory infections with herpesvirus, cytomegalovirus, Aspergillus, Coccidioides, Candida, Actinomyces, Cryptococcus, Histoplasma, Blastomyces, Phycomycetes, Pneumocystis carinii, and Strongyloides; aid in the diagnosis of asbestosis
Special Instructions
Include type of specimen and pertinent clinical information such as patient's name, age, Social Security number, clinical impression, past diagnoses, radiographic findings, and history of radiation or chemotherapy on the request form.
Limitations
Allowing fluid to stand for a prolonged period before processing may cause deterioration and artifact. Specimens prepared with fixatives containing 50% ethyl alcohol, such as Saccomanno fixative, are not acceptable for microbiology testing.

Collection Instructions
Washings or aspirates collected during the endoscopic examination should be collected and mixed with an equal volume of 50% ethyl alcohol or Saccomanno fixative. Specimens should be properly labeled and delivered immediately to the laboratory. Submit specimens in their original collection containers.
