C-Peptide (Serial Monitor)
Use
The C-Peptide (Serial Monitor) test is used for the long-term serial monitoring of C-peptide levels in patients. It allows for a detailed graphic summary to be generated over time, providing valuable insights into the patient's metabolic status, particularly in the context of differentiating between insulinomas and factitious hypoglycemia due to exogenous insulin. It may also be useful in assessing the insulin secretory reserves of patients with diabetes.
Special Instructions
Patients should be advised to discontinue biotin supplementation, known as vitamin B7, B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R, at least 72 hours prior to specimen collection, as it may interfere with test results. Serial monitoring requires the submission of the patient's Social Security number. It is important for the laboratory to consistently use the same assay method across different testing instances for reliable serial monitoring.
Limitations
Values obtained using different assay methods should not be used interchangeably for serial testing, as different methods may have varying sensitivities and specifities. Additionally, results may be affected by biotin supplementation, leading to inaccurate readings if not properly accounted for. Test results could be misleading if considered as standalone evidence of the presence or absence of disease, as they should always be interpreted within the broader clinical context.
